Debut Victory For McConnell at Croft - British Supersport
Virgin Media Yamaha's Billy McConnell finally realised his full potential in the Supersport class as he transformed pole position into a last gasp debut victory at Croft today, 12 August.
Lining up for his third pole position of the season, Billy tucked in behind Ian Lowry who stole the holeshot from the lights. A Steve Allan crash on the first lap brought the safety car out for two laps. Billy knuckled down as Lowry got the green light as the riders crossed the line for the start of the fourth circulation.
The final few laps produced a nail-biting climax as Billy pushed his Yamaha R6 and Pirelli tyres to the limit holding off the advances of Dennis Hobbs whilst closing the gap to Lowry.
Lowry ran wide into the hairpin on the penultimate lap and Billy knew that his opportunity would soon arise as he was now close enough to smell the fumes from the Suzuki's exhaust. Braking for the run in to Tower, Billy took the inside line, making a clean pass and holding firm through to Jim Clark Esses and the final sector of the race.
A jubilant McConnell took the chequered flag with a new lap record of 1:22.689s, and both his and Virgin Media Yamaha's maiden win in the fiercely contested British Supersport series.
Billy McConnell: "At last, it's so great to repay Rob and the team with a win. It's a big thing for us as we all work so hard to make it work and to support each other. We'd had a tough day with Tommy crashing but to lift the team spirit with our first Supersport win is an honour. I'm absolutely chuffed, my Dad is here from Australia at the moment so it makes it even sweeter."
