Motorcycle Chassis and Suspension re-engineered to match Rider attributes

All standard suspension setups have compromises. Often, replacement of pistons or adjusters are needed to cure these problems. Here are some questions that people have asked us, with our replies and solutions based on the information provided.

"G'day, I am interested in upgrading the suspension on my 1996 Ducati 900SS and wondered if you could give me some advice and a price estimate to carry out the following work:-
1. New front fork springs & revalve and also apply Titanium Nitride to sliders
2. New rear shock spring & revalve. Titanium nitride to shaft and modification to allow ride height adjuster (Maybe buy a new unit here?)"

Application: Sports/Touring 95kg + 80kg
"Due to the lack of adjustability in the Blackbird's suspension I'm having trouble with going from riding on my own to taking the missus and some luggage on trips. Basically I need some ease of adjustment in the rear suspension preload. The existing shock is a pain in the arse to adjust and the spring is too soft anyway. As with the forks, they are sprung too soft and the damping needs some help.... Could you offer some suggestions to which way would be the best to go for some cost-effective modifications for the type of riding I do?"

  Honda CRF 250X 2005  e
Application: Enduro 110kg
Problem: Bottoming
"I bought a new 2005 CRF250X in Dec '05. I noticed immediately that my weight was a bit much for the stock spring. I can't set the race sag correctly and the bike bottoms out when landing off jumps. I weigh approx 245lbs and I'm looking to replace the spring with one better suited for my weight. I'm also unsure as to whether I need to replace the components of my front forks?"

Application: Sports / Rideday 75kg
Problem:     Wallowing in corners
"Hi, I would like to upgrade the front suspension on my zrx and understand that the cartridges used in 04 and later models are sealed on the compression valve, making it difficult to upgrade.
I used the bike mainly for sports riding/touring and a few ride days
The bike seems to wallow a bit in fast corners and the adjustment range is poor
I currently have the compression damping backed right out and the rebound 1 click from max. This makes a difference from the standard settings but still not great. Seems to be too much compression and not enough rebound?
I have read about your work Ken's (AMCN) ZRX and was surprised to hear the forks were revalved, no other suspension shops have said they can be done?
Any advice and upgrade options you would recommend for this bike?
Thanks,
James"

  Suzuki GSXR600 2005  e
Application: Sports/Rideday 50kg
"Hi, I've just purchased a new 05 GSXR600, I only weigh 50 kilos, I've done a lot of racing in the past but this bike is just for sportsriding and occasional track day. I did soften the spring preload so I have just about a cm sag of the rear and softened compression a rebound a lil, also turned front preloads out to compensate for rear adjustment and also took some compression and rebound damping out. Basically was averaging 140-160km bends but was being kicked around a lot by the bumps, a bit unnerving when banked over at those speeds. Basically would you be able to price me some fork springs and maybe a valving kit for my weight and a rear shock with correct spring for my weight also"

"Hi Folks, I enquired about your services some time ago and am now at a stage where time permits me to remove the shock from my bike. I've had the bike since new and have covered >80,000 k's without touching the rear shock. Ride is harsh and not at all compliant, regardless of what I do to the tyre pressures. Could you give me some idea of what might be required - I think last time you mentioned the possibility of needing a new spring amongst other things. Also the bike has pre-load and re-bound capability - would these still be operative after a re-build? Thanks."

"...The front forks on my bike: I fitted a set of RaceTech valves, 1k.g. springs and 20 wt. oil 110 m.m. from the top of the legs and they feel much better but I have a few queries that I hope you can help me with ~ Couldn't get 20 wt oil so I had to mix 1 bottle of Harley Davidson "Heavy Duty" & 1 bottle of "Extra Heavy Duty" fork oil together - was told that the wts. were 16 & 22 which would average out as approx. 20 wt. when mixed together. First off the forks were far too hard and I've had to wind off 14 turns of preload, they feel much better (perfect on the track) but are still perhaps a bit hard and I don't think that I'm getting the full range of travel that I "think" I should have eg: The cable ties are 40 m.m. away from the bottom of the lower fork tree after a typical day's riding so I'm wondering if I should (a) Replace the oil with a known wt. (b) Take some oil out or (c) Something else you can suggest to me to try...

...my impression is that the front is "chattering" across high speed bumps during cornering – I found myself running wide through a few corners but don’t know if this was entirely due to the forks losing traction or me losing confidence when the front started to "chatter" – It’s fine on smooth and undulating corners but as soon as there’s some ripples or bumps it seems to "chatter" (for want of a better explanation)

Hope you can advise a fix for it …"

Bike Lowering Front & Rear
"Hi there,
I am wanting to lower my bike by 2 inches and have purchased a set of Vortex Lowering Links for the back and an adjustable kickstand to replace the stock one.
Could you please give me a quote to lower the back with the lowering links I have and also to lower the front to a suitable height as well. Thank you.
Regards,
Billy"
